Storm the Stage is a Rotary initiative to foster the talents of young Australians in the performing arts. Enriching lives and providing opportunities to perform and work collaboratively with professionals, Storm the Stage promotes talent and excellence in performance.

2010 was the first time Rotary Club of Altona had entered the competition and we were thrilled to have local Stacey Louise make it through to the Victorian Finals. Stacey attended one of our Lunch meetings and as a special treat delivered her beautiful voice to our club. Well done Stacey, and thank you.

Pictured is our President Jim Donnar handing over the chair to Judith Jones the centers physiotherapist with him is Past President Clara Westhorpe who instigated the Early Childhood Intervention Trust in 2003 in partnership with the Yooralla Society of Victoria. The trust kept on working towards a goal to support children born with disabilities in the western suburbs. The Trust was set up with $50,000 raised by the Altona Rotary club since 1996 and a contribution of $3,000 from The Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing. The commitment was to provide $18,000 per year to fund a Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Speech therapist, and a Specialist teacher to educate children born with disabilities. This incentive is now funded by the Government. The trust has so far contributed $77,000 including the $4,900 for the Gamma chair. The next project is a wheel chair friendly cubby house which is being constructed by Victoria University and will be installed in the kinder grounds mid June.

Williamstown Art Exhibition

This art show is a favourite annual event that draws increasing crowds every year. We did however encounter a minor hiccup when our trailers used for hauling equipment to the show were stolen.

Unable to transport our usual fencing, on-site Rotarians did a fabulous job setting up the exhibition using hessian ‘ponchos’ to create a temporary enclosure. Although at first a little taken back by this unusual creation, guests and exhibitors soon welcomed it with open arms.

Rotary Club of Altona helped deliver another successful art show and our sponsorship remains intact.

Silent Auction

This year’s Silent Auction doubled as a fun Murder Mystery event, with guests treated to an evening of murder, mystery and mayhem. Of course our Silent Auction was a great success, raising funds in excess of $7,000. A special thanks goes out to the large St John Ambulance table that brought so many friends and family to support our fundraising efforts.

Group Student Exchange - GSE

A highlight of the past year was the Rotary District’s selection of our very own Michael Hick to take part in the Rotary Group Student Exchange (GSE). Each year, Rotary selects a team of young professionals on a month-long Group Study Exchange to another Rotary District. Michael, never having travelled overseas before, was sent to Iowa, Nebraska where he met and befriended many fellow Rotarians. Michael learned invaluable new skills and embraced the culture and workmanship of this friendly District. An impressive farewell evening was organised for all candidates by Clara Westhorpe with 110 guests attending. Our Altona MC for the evening was Peter Shepheard whose gift of the gab was enjoyed by all.

Rebuilding Logan's Reserve Rotunda

Rotary Club of Altona, with the support of local community and the permission of Hobson Bay City Council, installed a brand new floor, at the same time making it more easily accessible for less mobile community Members. Peter McDonald used his impressive engineering skills to design brackets for existing seating within the Rotunda thus making the structure safer and stronger for everyone. Thanks go out to Peter, Kevin Campbell, Frank Fleming, and Andrew Miles to name but a few.

Building New Lives

Rotary Club of Altona raised funds to bring Nicasio Cardenas, a 26 year old Philippines man to Australia to receive life-saving surgery on a severe neural tube defect. Thanks to the work of Brighton plastic surgeon Alan Breidahl and a team of volunteers, he now has a new face and new hopes for his future. Nicasio stayed on in Altona for a short period of time following his operation which gave us all a chance to meet, greet and get to know him on a more personal level. When asked how he felt after his surgery, Nicasio responded “It's like I am dreaming". Not only did we raise the funds to bring Nicasio here, we also raised $300 to help support his family while he was absent, as well as gifting him $1,000 on his return to the Philippines.
This is what Rotary is all about – making dreams real.

Public Speaking Workshop

Rotary has for many years run Public Speaking competitions for young people.  An important life skill, Rotarians are always delighted to support young people as they learn and better their public speaking skills.

Rotary Club of Altona, through May Wilson and her Toastmaster team, conducted a Public Speaking Workshop at the Seaholme Primary School. This educational and inspiring workshop was received extremely well by teachers, students and parents, instilling confidence and moral among the children who took part. Thank you, May.
